{She Said} Ahh the Joys... Miscommunication

This is literally a conversation I had with a student 20 minutes ago...

Student is waiting in the hall when I arrive in the morning.

Me: Are you here to see me?

Student: No, Ms. _______.

I go into my classroom and come back out 2 minutes later.

Student: Mrs. Gilpin, I need to see you about a missing paper. Gradebook says I am missing a set of vocab windows- I need those.

Me: Alright. They are in the absent work folder.

Student: I think I have them.

Me: (blank stare)

Student: In my backpack.

Me: So you don't need them?

Student: (blank stare)

Me: I need you to tell me what you need from me.

Student: My book might be in here.

Me: (looking at the sea of history books in my room) That's going to be a tough one.

He eventually just sat down and worked on the assignment (that he DID have) using one of my books. I won't even mention how generous of me this was being that it was NOT my tutorial morning. I'm a gem.
